shell

Hello , I have a new usb interface board that I am trying to programme with QB. To set the bits I write SHELL " ousb io portb 255"etc..To read the ports I write SHELL " ousb io pinc" This works fine but when control returns to my programme I find that i am left with a number on screen in a box that i don't seem to be able to use in my Programme.I don't have enough experience to turn it into a variable. Can Any one help?
An example would be when I read an analogue signal eg Shell "ousb ADC 5" that will return with say a three digit number on screen . Would any one kind enough to reply please use beginners Jargon. Thanks in advance.
Steve
